On the 1st of June, 2011 stuffed red deer are exhibited in Sakhalin regional museum in fauna showroom for the first time.

Creation of new Sakhalin and Kuril islands natural-science exposition is still in progress.
During the last 2 years 3 stuffed bears, 3 stuffed reindeer, stuffed raccoon dogs, stuffed sables and other animals were already made. Most of this stuffed animals are still in museum storages, and it will be great work in exposition design and purchasing of special safe show-cases for exposure.
Stuffed red deer was made in «Studia Suhareva», taxidermal shop of new technologies, St. Petersburg, on museum demand. Starting from the 1st of June, 2011, stuffed red deer are exhibited in our museum in fauna showroom for the first time.
European red deer— Ñervus elaphus L. is a big deer of 2,5 metres long and weighing 250 kg for bucks and 2,16 metres and weighing to 180 kg for does. This form is widespread for Russian Far East in Amur region, in the south of Khabarovsk Territory and Maritime Territory. In 1965 it was acclimatized on Sakhalin island.
Red deer usually stand aback from human territories. On Sakhalin island population size is up to 180 units in Korsakov district and up to 50 units in Tymovsk district.
On the continent red deer inhabit broad-leaved forest, on the island it is mountain coniferous and mixed forest or river valley. In winter red deer avoid deeply-snowed zones, in summer they often come to Mordvinov bay coast, where they can eat in oak groves, sedge or reedgrass meadows. The fodder includes leaves of wood species or herbs. In winter these animals eat willow sprouts and larch or fir bark. Red deer keep together in groups of 3 or 4 units, bucks and does separately. These animals live day lifestyle in the thick of the forest and night lifestyle in places close to the town.
Stags always cast horns in March or April, and new horns become growing up in 5 or 7 days. Rut is usually in September. In this process does from a year and a half and elderly stags are involved. Rut may attend stags roaring. Stags practically don’t eat in this time. In this period stags fights with fatal outcome sometimes may occur.
Pregnancy of a doe lasts 240 days. Young deer birth takes place from the end of May to an early June. Usually it is 1 deer, 2 deer are very seldom. On Sakhalin island the main enemy of red deer is brown bear. Red deer is very valuable fur-bearing animal. Hunting under license is allowed, but in connection with the reduction of red deer population it is absolutely prohibited on Sakhalin for next 3 years.
