PREHISTORIC INSECTS IN AMBER

13.06.2017

Welcome to the Sakhalin Regional Museum famous exhibition of natural amber inclusions «Prehistoric insects in amber». You will see new extremely rare and beautiful exhibits that will be demonsrated in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk for the first time.
The exhibition presents a variety of insects preserved in their original form in natural amber — succinyl, whose age is 40–50 million years old, which corresponds to the Paleogene — geological period that follows the Cretaceous. It was the period when reptiles became extinct and the number and diversity of prehistoric mammals exploded. Belemnites were spread in the seas and giant running birds of prey diatryma — on land. During this period, bizarre mastodons, glyptodon, megateriumy and paraceratherium lived on Earth. Since then, the Earth has survived many glacial periods and continents have changed their positions.

Insects in amber are an invaluable gift of nature, a kind of time machine that allows you to look deep into the times. The prehistoric insects were preserved unchanged until the present day.
We invite you to visit the exhibition «Prehistoric insects in amber» to see the ancient arthropods that lived on this planet about 500 000 centuries ago!
