On June 28, the Museum and the Sakhalin Regional Narcological Dispensary joined to the events conducted in connection with the International Day against Drug Abuse and held Say No to Drugs! event as part of the Health Lessons at the Museum project.
Every year many countries celebrate the International Day against Drug Abuse on 26 June in order to strengthen action and cooperation to achieve the goal of an international society free from drug abuse.
Today nearly over 560,000 drug addicts are registered with narcological dispensaries in Russia. The total number of Russians who occasionally use drugs and psychotropic substances exceeds 8.5 million people, one and a half million of whom consume heroin. Around 100,000 people die from drug overdoses in Russia every year. In recent years, drug addicts have «grown younger». The use of narcotic drugs among 1013 year-olds become more frequently.
Drug addiction is not a disease in the ordinary sense of this word. But this is not an ordinary fault out of those that are inherent in healthy people. A person who falls for an addict gradually destroys his best moral qualities; he or she becomes mentally ill, loses friends, then a family; can not learn a profession or forgets the skills he / she used to have; remains out of work; becomes involved in crimes; brings the abyss of bad luck to himself or herself and others and, finally, slowly and faithfully destroys his or her personal body.
«Men say life is short, and I see them doing their best to shorten it» (Jean-Jacques Rousseau).
«It is easier to overcome a bad habit today than tomorrow» (Confucius) We encourage everyone: «Make the right choice!» Choose life! Be healthy and happy!"
