Severyanka — 2017 Contest at the Museum

On August 12 and 13, 2017, the third regional competition among representatives of the indigenous peoples of the North, Severyanka-2017 (North Girl), was held at the Sakhalin Regional Museum within the framework of the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples. It was organized by the Regional Council of Authorized Representatives of the Indigenous Peoples of the North of the Sakhalin Oblast, together with the Okha Non-Governmental Organization "Center of Preservation and Development of the Traditional Culture of the Indigenous Peoples of the North KykhKykh («Swan»), the Public Chamber of the Sakhalin Oblast with the official support of the Indigenous Peoples Department of the Governor’s Office and Sakhalin Oblast Government, the Center for conservation of biodiversity, traditional knowledge, development of the gastronomic culture, healthy lifestyle and legal education Khraniteli (Keepers).
On August 12, twenty representatives of the indigenous small-numbered peoples of the North participated in the competitive program. They showed their sewing and cooking skills and abilities, made speeches in their native language and demonstrated talents taking part in the creative works competition.
Based on the results of the contest program and the decision of the jury, the following are the names of the winners:

The contest program was complemented by performances of ethnic collectives from different parts of Russia: Murmansk, Arkhangelsk, Kamchatka, Chukotka, Altai, Evenkia, Yamal.
On August 13, the Sakhalin Regional Museum held a workshop on the following issues:
- ecological agriculture in Russia and the world;
- agricultural and ecological tourism;
- international agro-gastronomic movement «Slow Food»;
- the basic legislation on food security and the rights of indigenous peoples to preserve traditional nature management.
As part of the workshop, the competition project «Delicious, Clean, Honest food — Our Right and Future. Sakhalin Starts!» was held for the first time on Sakhalin. A «Lesson on the Education of Taste among Young People» was followed on by superb food which every person could taste.
