On September 1220, 2017, the Sakhalin Regional Museum, with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Archives of the Sakhalin Region and in partnership with the Kuril Museum of Local History and the Kurilsk Cultural Centre held events in the framework of the Museum Tours project on the island of Iturup.
The Museum Tours project began its activity in 2016. The first trip was to the South Kuril Museum on the island of Kunashir. In 2017, Sakhalin Regional Museum specialists visited to the Kuril Local History Museum on the island of Iturup. The program of Museum Tours project is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Sakhalin Oblast and the 80th anniversary of the building of the Sakhalin Regional Museum which is a monument of cultural heritage and a historical and architectural sight of the Russian Federation.
The «Museum Tour» project events were focused on people of a wide range of ages and social orientations.
The programme was presented by specialists of the Sakhalin Regional Museum: Tatyana Pavlovna Chaychenko, Head of the Scientific and Educational Department, Konstantin Anatolyevich Kuznetsov, Guide of the Scientific and Educational Department and Tatyana Chen, Head of the Exposition and Exhibition Sector, History Department.
The «Museum Tours» project has made it possible to visit the Sakhalin Regional Museum, even if you are on another island!
Several educational programs were brought to Iturup:
Sakhalin of Bronislaw Pilsudski is part of the Museum project, which became the winner in the grant contest conducted under Energy Social Initiatives Fund and became the Best Project of 2016. The scenario of the project is based on real events, described by the ethnographer himself and published in local historical publications. It gives a clear picture of life of the indigenous peoples of Sakhalin. The special thing was that the organizers had brought a suit of a convict and invited schoolchildren, who came at the local museum, to take part in the theatrical performance.
Sakhalin Regional Museum specialists brought to Kurilsk the History Keepers exhibition dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the museum studies in Sakhalin. The exhibition is now up and running in the Kurile Museum of Local History. It tells about the history of the museum studies, starting with the first museum collections and unique exhibits displayed at the Alexandrovsk post in 1896.
The lecture «Russia and Japan. History of Neighborhood» was especially popular, because it touched the issues concerning directly the life of the inhabitants of the island of Iturup. The story of the historian covered the period from the first Russian-Japanese treaties on friendship, trade and borders, until the last stage of the Second World War and the official date of the establishment of the Sakhalin Oblast on January 2, 1947. The listeners received answers to important and burning issues related to their island, learned interesting facts from the history of Russian-Japanese diplomatic relations, features of Japanese militarism and the last stage of World War II.
As for the little kids-islanders, interactive classes were conducted on making the Nivkh basket and straw dolls, and fascinating classes in local history through acquaintance with the islands of the Sakhalin region, their features, using puzzles specially made for this purpose.
This year, for 9 days, the project initiators told to more than 500 spectators of five settlements of Iturup Island about the history of the Sakhalin region using interesting formats.
