The museum publication reflects the main stages in the establishment and development of museum studies in Sakhalin from the end of the 19th century to the middle of the second decade of the 21st century. The pieces of the history of Sakhalin museums were put together by scientists who studied the opening of the first Sakhalin Museum (18951905) in Alexandrovsk Post (now Aleksandrovsk-Sakhalinsky), which was named in honour of the «15th Anniversary of the October Revolution» in the north of the island and the Karafuto Prefecture Museum (19171945) in Toyohara (now Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk) in the south of the island.
