May 25 at 4:00 p.m. the Sakhalin Regional Museum opens an exhibition «Are They Our Like-Minded Fellow Creatures?» from the collections of the State Darwin Museum (Moscow). The exhibition will tell about the experimental study of animal intelligence.
Do animals, birds, insects have intelligence? How deep is the abyss separating man and the rest of the animal world? Often, to answer this question unequivocally, it is not enough to conduct observations of animals’ behavior in natural habitat. That is where a carefully planned and prepared experiment comes in.
At the exhibition, the results of numerous experiments on the evaluation of the mental abilities of animals are compared with school lessons. The ability to read and recognize geometric figures, construct sentences, make something not with hands but with paws or beaks, the ability to navigate in space, draw and, finally, be naughty at break time. According to many of these parameters, animals are quite comparable to humans and in some ways they surpass us….
The exhibition will run until September 30, 2018.
