ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXCAVATIONS ON SHUMSHU ISLAND

On November 21, as part of the lecture series «Natural History of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands» a lecture on the archaeological excavations on Shumshu Island was delivered by Olga Alekseevna Shubina, head of the museum’s archeology department in the Sakhalin Regional Museum.

Olga Alekseevna shared her experience in conducting scientific expeditions, told about nineteen archaeological monuments that were found on the northernmost island of the Kuril Ridge during one field season and about the discovery of 4,000-year-old burial of an ancient person.

The attendees had the opportunity not only to obtain reliable information from the specialist who was directly involved in the activities of the archaeological expedition, but also to see photos of the excavation process, tools and household items that were found on the island and used by people lived on Shumshu for 4 thousand years until the beginning of the XIX century.
College of Service and Tourism Management students listened to the lecture with great interest and expressed a desire to personally take part in the next archaeological expeditions of the Museum.
