On December 8, Mountain Day was celebrated at the Sakhalin Regional Museum timed to coincide with the International Mountain Day, which is officially celebrated on December 11.
The event began with an interactive lecture with the demonstration of minerals «Colors of Minerals» by Alexander V. Solovyov, senior researcher of the Sakhalin Regional Museum.
While the grown-ups were listening to a lecture on minerals, a master class «Volcanic eruption» was held for the youngest. The children were shown the process of a volcanic eruption, and then they themselves made volcanoes using play dough. Kids were pleased to took their wonderful crafts home.
Also this day museum visitors learned to paint a mountain landscape with acrylics on fabric. The amazing property of acrylic paints is that it becomes extremely difficult to remove once dry, and therefore crafts are kept for a long time.
After the class, Denis Gusarov, member of the Union of Sports Tourism and Mountaineering of the Sakhalin Region and the member of the URUBKO CAMP team told about the mountains and about their conquest, as well as about his own hikes in the mountains. After his report many visitors got the urge to go on a trip to the mountains.
Maria Vitalevna Ryzhikova, head of the Sakhalin Region Anti-Avalanche Center, presented the document under the title «Sakhalin Avalanches» with the information about avalanche-prone areas and mountain safety rules. She also showed a video about the avalanche event.
Older children attended the «Mysterious Summit» class and made a mountain key chain.
In addition to lectures and classes, anyone who wanted could have completed the quest «Mountains Hid in the Museum».
