April 12, 1961 was the date of the first human space flight. 108 minutes spent by Yuri Gagarin in flight on the Vostok-1 spacecraft, opened the gate into space for other explorers.
The flight lasted 1 hour and 48 minutes. While being in space, Gagarin was maintaining radio contact with the team on Earth, making observation from the spacecraft portholes and controlling operations of the space machines.
On April 14, 1961 under the decree of the USSR Presidium of the Supreme Soviet Yuri Alekseyevich Gagarin was given the title of Hero of the Soviet Union.
The first manned space flight was the achievement of Soviet science and technology, marked the beginning of a new era in the history of human exploration of near-Earth space.
