On November 27, 1:00 p.m. a popular science lecture «Gemology is the science of precious stones, or the Mysteries of gemstones» will be given at the Sakhalin Regional Museum as part of the Natural History of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands Lecture Series. The lecture is delivered by Yulia Andreyevna Stepnova, Research Associate of the Laboratory of Avalanche and Mudflow Processes of the Sakhalin branch of the Far Eastern Geographical Institute, Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Candidate of Geological and Mineralogical Sciences.
Although the unusual, bright and rare minerals have attracted the attention of people since ancient times, specialists began to study precious and ornamental stones in the early twentieth century. At the lecture, the attendees learn how and when the science of gemology appeared, whether it is possible to estimate the value of stone by eye, what you need to pay attention to when buying gems and gemstone jewelry, as well as methods for identifying natural materials, their synthetic analogues and artificial materials.
