The Chinese Shadow Puppetry is over 2,000 years old.
Legend says that when a favorite concubine of a Chinese emperor died he was so heartbroken by the loss that he became deeply depressed and thought of stepping down from his reign.
One of the emperor’s ministers invited the emperor to his concubine’s bedchamber where the emperor saw the silhouette of his beloved behind the curtain. She got up and walked, her profile was beautiful. Since then, the emperor and his courtiers have watched as a shadow, similar to the emperor’s beloved, moves behind the finest fabric: she walks, plays musical instruments, sits by the window. The emperor suddenly realized that this fabric is not an eternal barrier between them, that his beloved continues to live somewhere, and for surely someday they will be together once again. He came out of depression, recovered his spirits and returned to his duties.
And so the shadow play was born.
Are there any other beautiful legends and stories about the origin of the shadow play? How are dolls and decorations made for shadow performances? How can you show a shadow show yourself?
You will learn the answers to these questions by visiting the museum event with a master class «Shadow Puppetry» from November 18 to 22.
