The richly illustrated book is the first to document the archaeological and historical sites discovered in the Yuzno-Kurilsky district of the Sakhalin Region (Far East of Russia) by the early 21st century. It contains historical overview of archaeological research conducted on the island of the southern Kuriles, description of 181 ancient sites and settlements on Kunashir, Shikotan, Yuri, Zelyonyi and Tanfilyeva islands, and characterization of their inherent features, cultural identity and degree of preservation. Plan views of archaeological sites published for the first time have been made up by the authors in the process of making inventory of the Yuzno-Kurilsky districts cultural heritage objects as well as maps of the Kunashir Island and Lesser Kuril Ridge islands showing all currently known archaeological sites. Separate Chapter is devoted to historical objects and monuments. The purpose of the book is to familiarize the Sakhalin Region residents, scientific community and the state power agencies with beauty and diversity of the southern Kuriles historical monuments. Its objective is to show great potential for further scientific research to come, and also lay down grounds to ensure registration and protection of the all newly discovered historical and cultural objects.
